What to check, and what to ask

General guidance for homeowners, not specific to your system — worth knowing before you book anyone, including us.

  1. One dead outlet is often a tripped GFCI somewhere else

    Bathroom, garage, outdoor and kitchen outlets are frequently protected by one GFCI upstream. The dead outlet may be several rooms from the one with the buttons on it.

  2. An outlet that only works when a wall switch is on is wired that way on purpose

    Half-switched outlets are common in living rooms and bedrooms, meant for a lamp. Before calling it a fault, try every switch in the room.

  3. A faceplate that is warm, or a plug that feels loose, is a real signal

    Warmth, buzzing, browning around a slot or a plug that will not stay in are all worth acting on. They are among the few electrical symptoms that get worse quietly.

  4. Ask what the replacement is, not just that it will be replaced

    Whether the location calls for GFCI or tamper-resistant protection is decided by where it is, not by preference. It is a fair question, and it should have a specific answer.

Try these first

  1. 1. Test the outlet with something you know works

    A phone charger or a lamp that is working elsewhere in the house. It sounds obvious and it settles the question of whether the outlet or the appliance is the problem.

  2. 2. Try every switch in the room

    Many living-room and bedroom outlets are half-controlled by a wall switch, on purpose, for a lamp. Flip each switch and try the outlet again before calling it dead.

  3. 3. Find the nearest GFCI and press RESET

    Check the bathroom, garage, kitchen counter and outdoor outlets for TEST and RESET buttons. One GFCI can feed several other outlets, including in other rooms. Press the button, nothing else.

  4. 4. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker

    Look for one sitting between on and off. Reset it once. If it goes again, leave it off — that is the circuit telling you something rather than misbehaving.

  5. 5. Note whether it is one outlet or several

    Try the other outlets in the room and the one on the other side of the same wall. One dead outlet and a dead run of outlets are two different jobs.
